Alcoholism is sometimes called Alcohol-use disorder and it is drinking alcohol in a way that is harmful.

The NHS list the following as signs of alcoholism:-

  • regularly drinking more alcohol than you mean to

  • having difficulty stopping or reducing the amount you drink, even if you want to

  • feeling guilty, remorseful or shameful after drinking

  • friends and family are concerned about your drinking

  • continuing to drink even when you are aware that it is causing problems for your health, work or relationships

  • needing a drink when you wake up in the morning

  • needing more amounts of alcohol to get the same effects

  • getting withdrawal symptoms when you stop or reduce your drinking
